3 ORGANIZING MISTAKES TO AVOID THIS FALL

FORGETTING TO PLAN OUT YOUR ORGANIZING.

Planning out your organizing is imperative to creating a successful organizing journey. Start by selecting a room that you wish to organize, and a corner from within that room that makes the most sense. Try to avoid starting with paper because each piece is so small and oftentimes creates a longer, more tedious task that is easier to walk away from. Instead start with something like clothing. When starting with clothing, typically you already have a home for it, like a closet/dresser, and it usually clears space for you quicker than most items. Continue going around the room, corner by corner, clearing space, and creating permanent homes for your belongings, until your entire space is organized.

NOT LETTING THINGS GO.
Oftentimes, we forget that letting things go is one of the biggest and most important steps to organizing. It can be one of the most difficult as well as one of the most rewarding aspects to organizing. There are several questions you can ask yourself to help you make these decisions. If after asking yourself these questions, you are still unable to make a decision, put it to the side and ask yourself later when you’ve had more time to process it. These questions include…
When was the last time I used it?
Do I love it? If not, why am I hanging onto it?
Would I buy this item again, if I didn’t have it?
Is this item worth the space it’s using?
Could this item be more useful to someone else?
Remember, when getting rid of an item, that does not mean you’re disposing of it. Most items are easily donated to either Housing Works or Goodwill so that someone else can use the item you no longer need.

WAIT TO SHOP FOR YOUR ORGANIZING PRODUCTS UNTIL YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED.
Although it’s very tempting to buy a ton of organizing products before organizing the space, try your best to avoid it. There are several reasons why you should hold off. Not only could you waste time and money buying products you don’t have a home for, you may need to buy more products that fit the space better once configuring where everything will go. Since you won’t know how many organizing products you need and where your organizing products will go, it’s best to hold off until you know exactly where you’re putting your items. Therefore, organize your space first, knowing you will add organizing products to enhance your space. Once you have your item in place, measure it, then determine how many organizing products you’ll need so you can accurately purchase the correct product and the right amount of product for your space. Don’t let your organizing products determine where you place your items, decide where your items are placed to determine your organizing products.
