Six Kitchen Tips Everyone Needs

CATEGORIZE

When it comes to organizing the kitchen, it is helpful to first categorize everything you have to get a sense of how many duplicates you may have. This will also help you recognize what you commonly use vs. what you never use or have only used once. In order to categorize everything… you may have to first take everything out. Although your kitchen will look crazy, it’s only temporary and will help you see everything you have and will lead to easier decision making.

DECLUTTER

Once you categorize all your items and have them laying out in front of you, I recommend asking yourself what you need, what you’d like to keep, and what you can easily get rid of. First, get rid of everything you can. If you cannot get rid of much, look to see what you have duplicates of. Once you get rid of some duplicates, the decluttering bug will bite, and you’ll want to get rid of a whole lot more. If you are having trouble getting rid of anything… try asking for a second opinion, whether that be from a partner, friend, family member, or professional organizer like Aristotle Organizing Inc.

USE DIVIDERS

There are only a couple organizing products that I like to use for the kitchen. One of which is a divider for your pots and pans/lids. Dividers are easy to find at The Container Store, Amazon, or even at Bed Bath & Beyond. By using a divider, each of your pots, pans, and lids are separated and become much easier to access than if they were stacked on top of each other. You can use dividers for… pots, pans, lids, baking sheets, cutting boards, or anything else that could utilize slender vertical space.

USE BINS

Bins, usually medium-large, are the other products I highly recommend. Bins can be very helpful, especially in the pantry. You can separate your products into nut butters/spreads, chips, snacks, bars, breakfast, grains, pasta, sauces, etc. This will help you and your family keep an organized pantry. Bins can also be used for smaller appliances, appliance parts, water bottles, and much more. I typically recommend using the plastic bins above the straw or wooden ones, as foods and liquids commonly spill in pantries.

USE DRAWER DIVIDERS/ORGANIZERS

Drawer dividers/organizers are another wonderful product. These can help in organizing many of your smaller items such as a junk drawer, cutlery, teas, coffee pods, spices, etc. use your imagination. If it’s categorized, you use it often, and it fits in the drawer, I suggest using it. Drawers, above all other things, are typically the easiest areas of accessibility, so use them to your advantage. I recommend the bamboo utensil/cutlery inserts and drawer dividers for the kitchen, they are typically the cleanest look. If you foresee the drawer becoming gross or getting wet, then use the plastic ones.

DON’T OVERBUY PRODUCTS

Overbuying products is a very easy thing to do when you do not have a professional organizer guiding you on the right products to buy. The products I often see homeowners over buy or misuse are shelf risers, small bins, lazy susan’s (only use for spices/oils/sauces), and other products that are more specific rather than general in use. The problem with these products is they don’t use the whole space to your advantage. Oftentimes with these products, the shelves become cluttered and difficult to use, thereby doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing. Use products that are more general, such as bins, and dividers to separate the space as opposed to cluttering it with more things.
