The Different Kinds of Professional Organizers

There are several different types of professional organizers and professional organizing companies. One of the best insights to finding the right professional organizer/organizing company for you, is to narrow down what you need help with. Some questions to ask yourself might be…

Are you looking for someone to help you declutter your space?

Are you looking for a company to help you move?

Are you looking for help creating organizational systems?

Are you looking to get your files or business organized?

All are questions to ask yourself, some of which could lead to other revelations. Perhaps you’re moving and don’t have the time or knowledge on how to unpack yourself/your family or even your business. Maybe you just need a better filing system but don’t know where to start. Or maybe… You suffer from a mental disability that makes organization very hard and you need specific systems set in place to help you function day to day. Below are a list of different types of professional organizers/companies to help you figure out what kind of help will be most beneficial to you.

1. MOVE MANAGEMENT

The organizing companies helping with moves are typically the largest and most streamlined. If you are moving, hiring a professional organizing company, like Aristotle Organizing, will help you transition seamlessly to your new space. I advise, in order to have the smoothest transition, is to bring your professional organizer into the process early on. They will help you purge the items you don’t want to bring to your new home/business as well as organize your items so the right things are packed together. When it comes to the unpack, everything will already be categorized and your team of professional organizers will help you set up new systems so everything has a place and looks beautiful in each space.

2. TEAM ORGANIZING

There are few organizing companies that have teams, those that do, are typically companies that specialize in moves. If you have a larger project that is not a move, such as: An estate sale, a large purge, a large space/home to organize with a short time frame, then I suggest hiring a bigger professional organizing company, specifically one that offers multiple organizers, like Aristotle Organizing.

3. BUSINESS ORGANIZING

Business organizing can range from very large projects to very intricate and tedious projects. If you are working on filing, I suggest looking at organizers who specialize in paper organization or business organizing. If you are looking at moving into or out of a large office, I go back to hiring a large professional organizing company that has a team that specializes in larger projects. Although some companies specialize in residential as opposed to business organizing, it is helpful to have an organizing company that offers moves, larger projects and multiple professional organizers to oversee this process.

4. ONE ON ONE

A one on one organizer is the most common professional organizer you will come across in your search. Marie Condo is the perfect example of this… She helps clients go through their belongings and let go of the items that don’t “bring them joy.” When looking for a general organizer, they will help organize specific areas of the home, or even the entire home if there is a longer timeline. Their clients are typically repeat clients who need help every week or every month. They will help you declutter and organize your space over a longer period of time. There is nothing wrong with this, especially if you enjoy the consistency/have lots of time as it can often create wonderful bonds between client and organizer. I do have to say, although some smaller organizing companies do help their clients move, I recommend going with a specialist like Aristotle Organizing to handle your move for a cleaner process. They do not always have the experience or knowledge to make the process as clean and easy as it should be for their client.

5. SPECIALIZATIONS

When it comes to ailments that may inhibit one’s organizational ability there are certain tactics to use and more importantly certain organizers to hire. For specific mental/physical disabilities, I recommend finding an organizer that specializes with such individuals in order to be the most helpful. This does not mean that “specialist” organizers specialize in all disabilities, because that isn’t true. Typically, each of these specialties need a different professional organizer. Some professional organizers specialize with hoarders, while others specialize with those who have ADHD or even chronic disorganization. If you do not have someone you know or cannot find any organizer online, I recommend looking on the NAPO (National Organization of Productivity and Organizing Professionals) website, or contacting a professional organizer, such as Aristotle Organizing, and asking if they specialize and if not, if they could they point you in the direction of someone who does.
